The beginning of November was marked by my move into a new home in Olinda. There I’ve been cooking cuscuz, tapioca and feijao as well as getting used to the household “wildlife” – scorpions, spiders, cockroaches ants and bats. I did a dance course of Maracatu and other traditional dances from Recife like coco, afoxe and cavalo-marinho which means I can actually join in the fun when I go out and dance! Still working on forro…
I was also physically marked this November with the worst sunburn I have ever had in my life. My skin went from bright red to very tanned to blotchy as I started peeling like a snake. I learnt my lesson.
My friend Ben from university came to stay for a week. After 4 months away from home, seeing a friendly face gave me the biggest renewal of energy and it was nice to speak English sometimes when I was feeling lazy…!
Not having internet at home is very strange but it has forced me to get some reading done. I discovered that the library in Olinda is not the best place for that though, it is beautiful but the most sociable spot in town. Instead of working I ended up having a massage from an Argentinian man… And the surreal but also lovely experiences continue: celebrating Diwali in a Brahma Kumaris Centre, going to the organic market at 4am on a Saturday morning after staying out all night, going to the opening of a new technological art exhibition at the state museum (juice and appetisers included), being shown round my student’s school for one of our English classes.
Feeling very settled.
